    New Synth: Korg MS-20 Mini

Back in February, I treated myself to a new synth for my birthday: a fully-analog, semi-modular Moog Matriarch. I’d been curious about the modular world for awhile and needed a Moog in my arsenal, so this seemed like the perfect option. Oh boy, was it ever! I’ve already mentioned how this synth is the second instrument I’ve ever felt an uninhibited creative connection to – the first being the piano. So when another fully-analog, semi-modular synth popped up on FB marketplace for a steal, I did what any fully-alive, semi-intelligent person would do!

Here’s a little ditty I threw together my first morning jamming with it. All sounds, except drums, were made with the Korg.

    Prepping for NEPA Film Festival

    Studio Log | Ep 105 | Apr 01, 2025

The 2025 NEPA Film Festival begins this Friday! There are THREE films showing that I scored. This festival has been growing and this year it feels like there’s some real momentum behind the buzz.

Our local NPR/PBS station, WVIA, has been the biggest supporter of this festival. They put together this amazing sizzle reel:

I’ll be performing my neoclassical music at the Opening Night Gala and I’m teaming up with a new cellist, Colleen Ruddy! Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

I’m truly busting at the seams for this year’s film festival – not just because it’s a showcase of some of my work, but because it’s also a gathering of a community. Film requires an army of creative, ego-less people and this event will host a high concentration of them. In a world where allies are being betrayed and truth and law no longer matter and the internet is a dumpster and Hollywood is dying, I can’t imagine a better way to spend a weekend.

Getting Funky With My Moog Matriarch

    Studio Log | Ep 104 | Mar 21, 2025

I got my new Moog Matriarch out of the house last week! Typically, it’s the Minimoog or maybe the Sub 37 models that you’d see at a gig. The Matriarch being semi-modular is more designed for the studio. But Jesse Mower, frontman of the funk band Greenfield III (who opened my album release show last fall), doesn’t give a shit about convention! He insisted I bring it to a gig and figure it out “on the job.” And when last week’s invite coincided with his birthday, I couldn’t say no.

I have to say, the Matriarch’s use in a live setting is probably the industry’s best kept secret. This thing kicks ass live! It took me no time at all to find sounds in the moment, all of them awesome, and to get wacky when I wanted to. The gain staging in this thing is so flawless that, in some ways, it was even easier to use in a live setting than my Prophet or my Crumar Mojo.

We got the whole thing on video. Here’s one of the (9 minute!) songs we played:

Behind the Scenes: Little Shop of Horrors

    Studio Log | Ep 103 | Mar 7, 2025

I played Keys 2 for a run of Little Shop of Horrors here in Scranton the last couple weekends. Threw a camera up for the last show and put together a quick little edit of it.

I was using my Nord keyboard as a MIDI controller into Mainstage on my computer that had all the sounds. You’ll see my right foot pressing a pedal to advance to the next sound and my left foot (obscured) is operating a volume pedal.

It was fun getting to play music with a couple local legends I hadn’t gotten to play with yet. Esther, the music director, was excellent.

    New Composition: Growing Up

    Studio Log | Ep 102 | Feb 27, 2025

Last fall, I was approached by a label based in Barcelona, Spain, called AD21 Music to write and record a song for Piano Day that would be included on a compilation album of theirs.

(For the unaware, Piano Day is an international celebration of the piano held on the 88th day of the year [for the 88 keys on a piano]. This year it falls on March 29.)

I’m not a big label guy (as I mentioned in my last post), but for several reasons – reputable label with a long history, other composers already signed on that I’ve long wanted to connect with, excellent contract terms, and just plain desire – I decided to do it.

The album doesn’t drop until March 29, but I can share my song with you here. It’s called Growing Up. It’s a tuneful little waltz. My sister said it reminded her of the Married Life theme from the movie Up. I guess it is in a similar vein – nostalgic, charming, dramatic. I hope you enjoy it!

And here’s a little background on the song:
